Adulting: 101

I was reading about a college that is offering classes called “Adulting 101”

Say What????

These classes are to help college students/millennials learn life skills and to assist them with transitioning out of college. Some of the topics that will be covered are:

Basic or Bare Essentials of Cooking:
(one lesson is how to make a quesadilla with an iron!)
How to boil water, how to cook an egg, grocery shopping and what to have on hand (pantry items and explaining what a ‘a pantry’ is)

Basic Automotive care:
How to open the hood of the car and check the fluids, oil, transmission, water
Where to find the spare tire and how to change one
Auto insurance, yes it is important

Finance:
How to write a paper check and address an envelope
You need to put money into your account before you use your ATM/Debit card!
Once you have that new job, direct deposit and how to set it up if available
Managing your bills and Budgeting
Credit, why it is important and how to apply for a credit card

Finding friends in new places:
Wow, going off to college didn’t teach them how to make friends in new places? Interesting . . .
Being social in the work place (What not to ‘share’)
No, your boss is not your new BFF

Job Search:
Now that you have that degree, it’s time to find a job.
Resume writing
How to interview for a job (What to wear or not wear, don’t answer your phone or even look at it, etc)

I began to wonder, getting older is similar. The kids have moved on with their lives. Many of us find ourselves alone either through divorce or loss of a partner to death. Change in financial status. Is there a course of study for  Senioring 2.0?

Some sample courses:

Cooking:
Cooking for 1. Those old recipes just don’t work the same
Try shopping at the dollar store
Buy a 1/2 dozen eggs instead of the usual dozen.
Freeze slices of bread in ziplock bags. You know you aren’t going to eat the whole loaf before it starts going bad

Automotive care:
Put a reminder on your calendar or phone to check the oil or have it changed
Keys, Where did you put them?
Take the bus, Uber or Lyft

Finance:
Fixed incomes and how to survive
How to make your dollar go further
Do you really need that many credit cards?

Finding friends in new places:
Church is a good place to start
Actually venture out of your house and meet your neighbors
You might be going to a few more funerals now so, at least you will have something in common
meetup.com

Volunteering:
If you’re not working anymore, find a place to volunteer
Libraries always need help
Hospitals are grateful for volunteers

Anyone have anymore ideas for my Senioring 2.0 curriculum? I’m sure we will have lots of interest in the course. Some may even forget and sign up twice!
